Rules for Classification
new categories as of 2024
The first letter represents the main class:
A = Aircraft,
C = Civilian Vehicles,
D = Diorama,
F = Figures,
M = Military Vehicles,
O = Other,
S = Ships,
T = Theme class,
Y = Youth (junior).
S and A stand for Standard and Advanced judging.
Examples:
A7S = 1/72 Swedish Aircraft, Standard judging
A13S = 1/48 Swedish aircraft, Standard judging
A full list of categories can be found below.
Standard and Advanced judging
In standard judging classes (e.g. A1S) the following criteria are judged: overall impression, painting & finish and building skill. In standard judging classes, super-detailed and built-out-of-the-box models will be judged equally. A super detailed model will not gain any points for the extra detail, complexity etc.
In advanced judging classes (e.g. A1A) the criteria complexity will also be judged. An out-of-the-box model stands little chance against a well-detailed, complex model in these classes. Note! In the advanced judging classes, it is of great importance that the modeler describes the building process thoroughly (the quality of the kit, scratch building, extra details, complex painting etc.). Otherwise the judges will not be able to assess the complexity of the model.
In all of these classes only the main object is judged. Figures, bases, stowage etc. will not be judged.
Dioramas
A diorama tells a story. Therefore in the diorama classes we also judge the criteria story, what you want to tell with the diorama. A diorama with a well thought through and clear course of events will score high points in this criteria. The criteria composition is also unique to the diorama classes. Composition is about how the different items in the diorama are situated. Is there a balance in the diorama.
Vignette
In every main category of classes there are vignette-classes.
These are judged with the same criteria as the Standard and Advanced classes. What differs is that everything on the base will be judged, the main object, the landscape, figures, constructions and foliage.
Composition is judged in both Standard and Advanced classes, in addition to overall impression, painting & finish and building skill.
Figures
Figures will be judged individually, except for F5: Gaming figures – group, and F6: Figure vignette, were one or a small number of figures get judged together with the base work.
Youth (category for juniors)
This is the class for ALL competitors who have not yet reached 16 years of age. In this class, all types of objects compete against each other and there is no division into different scales. Standard and Advanced judging is not conducted in this class, since it has its own unique set of judging criteria.
Theme class
Every year at C4 Open we have a Theme Class. The judging of this class is based on how the modeler has interpreted the theme. Idea and creativity is important in this class. Two prizes are awarded in this class: Class winner, and honorary mention.
The theme is stated on the front page.
Scale
Classification is conducted according to physical size, i.e. 1/48 is larger than 1/72, not the other way around.
